More Than a Surgery: Tommy John and the Legacy of Returning to What You Love

MLB Tommy John LegacyAs Major League Baseball heads into the final stretch of its regular season, one name feels especially present this year: Tommy John.

His story is one of the most consequential in baseball and in sports medicine. It began with an injury that could have ended a career, and it became a turning point in what recovery could mean.

A 1-in-100 chance

In 1974, Tommy John tore the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his pitching elbow. At the time, that injury was widely seen as the end of the road for a pitcher.

Dr. Frank Jobe offered him another option: a UCL reconstruction, a procedure that had never been performed on a professional pitcher. Dr. Jobe estimated John’s chance of returning to the mound at about 1 in 100.

John said yes.

The comeback

After a long rehabilitation, John returned to the mound in 1976. He went on to pitch 14 more seasons and earned 164 of his 288 career wins after surgery.

His courage and Dr. Jobe’s innovation did more than save one career. Together they opened a path back to competition for generations of baseball players and throwing athletes. Today the procedure is known simply by his name.

Remembering Tommy John

Tommy John passed away on August 15, 2026, at age 83. His impact on the game, and on everyone who has come back from a UCL injury since, is honored and remembered.

His legacy lives on in the procedure that bears his name. It also lives on in the physicians and researchers who keep asking how athletes can recover, return, and reclaim what injury threatened to take away.

Carrying the work forward

Our valued customer, Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Lemak, reflects that same commitment in his work.

Together with Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Lemak helped establish the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). Research and education at ASMI have advanced the field’s understanding of pitching biomechanics, injury prevention, surgical outcomes, and return to play.

Today, Dr. Lemak and the team at Lemak Health carry that work forward. They care for professional and collegiate athletes, young players, active adults, and weekend warriors. Transcend Biologics is honored to support their orthopedic and sports medicine care with Tropocells® PRP.

The same hope, different goals

At Transcend Biologics, our mission comes from that same human purpose: supporting clinicians as they help people pursue a return to the activities they love.

For a professional pitcher, that might mean stepping back onto the mound. For a young athlete, it might mean rejoining the team. For someone else, it could be returning to a favorite sport, or simply moving through everyday life with more confidence.

The goals look different, but the hope behind them is the same: to regain something meaningful that once felt out of reach.

That purpose continues to inspire our work, and we’re grateful to the clinicians who carry it forward every day.
